The Modern Inquisition

Lately it seems I've been writing more non-metal related topics than actual metal news, but it is because there are some frightening realizations I've come to over the past couple of weeks that I am compelled to write about. There's the ongoing Ferguson, MO situation that is forcing the issue of corruption within law enforcement (and indeed, our very government), as well as the tempers of a concerned public, to reach critical mass. That, however, will be a different article.

This article is about another issue that as of late seems to have backslid from the progress I naively believed we had made; tolerance among Christians. In my naivete, especially after watching my local Pagan community grow to proportions I would never have believed possible (though still in the minority) and after meeting so many wonderful people of varying faiths who saw past religious labels and accepted me wholly for who I was, I had thought that Paganism & Traditional Witchcraft was no longer thought of as an obscure occultist sect of Satanism by most modern Christians - a misguided belief encouraged by pastors and parishioners who mistakenly think we believe that Satan even exists.

Slipknot's Corey Taylor Would Rather Dump Ice Over His Head Than Give Money to ALS

So ThePRP reported that Slipknot's Corey Taylor recently posted this footage of him doing the ALS ice bucket challenge, which to my understanding is a challenge wherein the challenged either donate money to ALS, or dump a bucket of ice water over their heads.

Mommy Advice of the Day: Roommates & Kids Don't Always Mix

Lately there's been something troubling me, and I just need to get it off my chest. Since this website gives me a convenient platform to voice my concerns and get an opinion on them, I'm using it now to its full capacity and will (hopefully) simultaneously enlighten you on some tips to looking for roommates if you have kids, and/or living with roommates who have kids.

An Open Letter to the Duggar Family... Re: Tolerance

The Duggars

Dear Duggars,

I would like to preface this letter by saying first and foremost that I bear no ill towards you whatsoever, and confess that I am usually watching your show every morning while I feed breakfast to my almost 9-month-old son ever since we moved here. He wakes up conveniently when your show starts, and for that first hour he's awake I will flip to TLC and revel in the fact that one woman could bear and raise so many children and still be ready for more despite the daily struggle it seems to sometimes present, and that one man would so patiently and lovingly put up with and help with it all - all while both having a saintly serenity in their countenance that never lets up for a moment.

Opeth & In Flames Announce Big North American Tour, Doesn't Come To VA, DC, or MD

Well, here are the dates and everything but they must have either, a) decided they were too good to show up anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic that wasn't some huge and overblown fucking venue with an almost guarantee of selling out the place or b) their labels didn't let them.

A Sound of Thunder Unveils Details for Kickstarter-Funded New Album, "The Lesser Key of Solomon"

This just in via Metal Underground:

Landless Theatre Company's Prog Metal Version of Sweeney Todd Opened Last Night

Sweeney Todd goes metal! (photo credit: Brandon Penick Photography)

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a play many read in their youth, and many more discovered when it was adapted to film years later. The screenplay is brilliantly written, the story is poignant, humorous, and bittersweet, yet altogether bleak and dismal. It perfectly and artfully displays the depths of a darkened soul on so even a level as only one who has tread darkness themselves could ever hope to articulate, or even understand.

The original screenplay itself is genius, so there seemed to be few ways to improve upon it - but the Landless Theatre Company has found the perfect way (and quite possibly, in my opinion, the only way) to do just that. Such a bloody, brutal and beautiful play deserves to be set to the finest prog metal (or progressive metal, for those who aren't familiar) music our infinitely talented local community has to offer! With this idea, and with the help of voices from such talented frontwomen as Irene Jericho of Cassandra Syndrome and Nina Osegueda of A Sound of Thunder and exceptional actors such as Andrew Lloyd Baughman, they have created a play that captured the attentions of Sondheim himself!

If you've never heard of 1349, you're really missing out. They're a fucking fantastically heavy black metal band, though not for the faint of heart.

Battlecross, Epica, Children of Bodom, Machine Head to Tour Beginning in October

EPICA at Hellfest 2007I'm a little bummed that they aren't coming any closer than Pennsylvania on this tour, but still... fucking Epica will be passing through the states along with the thrashers of Battlecross, the once-great (but now kinda meh) Children of Bodom (who will hopefully be playing mostly older songs), and Machine Head.

Battlecross will also be stopping in Mexico City with Black Label Society, and then to Brazil for three dates with Killswitch Engage and Memphis May Fire, according to Metal Blade.

Crowd Funding vs. Record Labels - Let's Analyze That Response From Nuclear Blast to Wintersun's Jari Mäenpää

MetalSucks posted an article recently containing the response to Wintersun's Jari Mäenpää claim that "[the label] sees crowd funding as a threat to their business and they would rather see Wintersun dead, than me doing a crowd funding campaign."

Essentially, he is (rightfully) blaming the label for the release of their upcoming album Time II since they will not allow him to accept funds from a crowd fund campaign that fans have already petitioned to start for them.

They didn't seem to want to analyze it over there at MetalSucks (for obvious reasons, they don't want to bite the hands that feed), which is cool. I saw a bunch of things in Nuclear Blast's response, however, that made me really want to point them out so that everyone can understand clearly what the ghost writer of NB's statement wanted to skirt around and avoid.

Mainly because, in my personal opinion, these things would be better off known.

The Thrifty Stay-At-Home Wife: Cleaning

How society sees us (photo: Pinterest) Ah, this one is the pinnacle of housewifery - cleaning. You'll be doing it a lot, whether you have children or not. Are not adults just as fucking messy at times? Of course they are, particularly because they're drunk or tired... sometimes both.

Cleaning can actually be a relaxing, meditative activity. Well, unless you have a sloppy roommate. Just lay the hammer down a few times and hope they'll find chores can be fun and relaxing, too, then all will benefit from the zen that exudes off an immaculately clean house.

Contrary to what most wealthy, well-to-do snobbish types think of us poorer folk, just because we don't have money doesn't necessarily mean we don't appreciate nice things. All it means is that we can't fucking afford those things, and we make do with what we have. You don't need a two-thousand dollar sofa or fancy furniture to make your home look and feel like a million bucks. It's all about keeping everything in order, stretching out products as long as they can be stretched so that you'll always have the tools you need to get that fresh feeling all up in the air of your humble abode.
