Epica Announces New Album Available For Preorder On iTunes

Epica has announced that their new album, The Quantum Enigma, is now available for preorder on iTunes. Per their Facebook page:

"The iTunes edition of the album includes the exclusive track "Banish Your Illusion" and a digi-booklet. You will receive Essence of Silence and Unchain Utopia as an instant download when you pre-order the album."

I have to say, though... I wasn't impressed by the first song they released, "Essence of Silence". It's an almost total departure from what makes them awesome in my opinion. It's too positive, poppy, and uninspired for my liking.

It seems to me that the song was intended to showcase Simone Simon's operatic abilities, and prove that becoming a mother has not affected her ability to hit the high notes. Perhaps Simone just wanted to prove that to herself, which I totally understand.

I'm not faulting her in the slightest. If you know me, you know how much I love Simone. I just know for a fact that at one point or another during pregnancy, you totally lose your ability to sing. It's different for everyone, and some have more or less trouble than others, but in most cases your voice deepens and is much harder to control because of extreme physical changes beyond your control. Not even practicing will avail you, for you risk developing bad habits while trying to work around the fact that your diaphragm no longer exists and you have little control over what you can do with your gut... not to mention there's a freaking baby clobbering it from all angles, which there's not much you can do about until after you give birth.

Anyway, enough with the speculation. For whatever reason, maybe they just weren't at their best when they wrote that one. It's not like they haven't had a bomb or two on previous albums, but I've still loved the majority of their music and rarely is the first release the best track. So there's still hope for this album, in my view.

Either way, I'll always love Epica and Simone will always be one of my top four inspirations as a vocalist. Right there next to Tarja Turunen, Amy Lee, and the magnificent Roy Khan formerly of Kamelot (he'll always be their true vocalist to me, for reasons I may one day explain).

Hoping for the best from you, Epica!
